Kathy Sullivan

Kathy Sullivan’s passion for animals began at an early age in Chicago, Illinois. In pursuit of a Master of the Arts in Art Therapy, Kathy studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Academy of Art, and the University of Louisville. The loss of her beloved thoroughbred motivated Kathy to became absorbed in the world of horse racing. Her energetic and expressive interpretation of jockey silks gained immediate recognition and success. Some of the corporations who have supported Kathy’s work are: Humana Corporation, Churchill Downs Corporation, Brown-Forman Corporation, Gulfstream Park, BloodHorse Publications, and Racing Suites Associate.

Kathy’s work has continued to grow and expand internationally. The 2006 Woodford Reserve bottle, which sold out, exposed Ms. Sullivan to a wider horse racing audience. A major achievement, which validated Ms. Sullivan as a Figurative painter, was being published in the international publication, American Art Collector.

Kathy continues to explore and improve her craft through pursuing education from the best facilities and educators. The Art Institute of Chicago awarded her the Recognition Merit Scholarship in 2007. Her main source of growth however comes from the mentorship of three contemporary masters: Susanna Coffey, Jane Rosen and Susan Howe. Through their guidance, Kathy strives to find the perfect balance between the rigidity of education and the spontaneity of pure expression. “It’s a difficult tightrope to walk but I’m dedicated to keeping the balance between these two polarities in my work. It’s what initially attracted people to my work and I don’t want to forget that.”
